Including religious minorities in tackling hate speech and promoting civic space

03:00 PM Day 1

How does restricted civic space and increasing violations of freedom of religion or belief (FORB) affect faith-based organisations’ space to manoeuvre?  Early findings from SMC’s survey to partners in 28 countries on civic space and FORB challenges for faith-based organisations will also be discussed. Experience and perspectives from Jennifer Jag Jivan, a female Christian leader from Pakistan and Quinn McKew representing Article 19, an international organisation defending freedom of expression, will also be shared. Together we will discuss insights on policy implications for Leaving No One Behind: related to  Hate speech targeting religious minorities in Malaysia, Myanmar and Bangladesh, and Strategies used by religious minorities to manoeuvre restricted civic space in Pakistan and regionally within Asia and examples of faith based and secular actors working together to bring about change.
